Alex+Ada

Thanks to Comixology, I just discovered Alex+Ada from Jonathan Luna and Sarah Vaughn. This story takes place in a near future where neural interfaces are common and androids just gained consciousness and some accidents happens to their owner time to time.
If you want to have a look for yourself the 1st issue is currently free.
I liked the zen futuristic aspect of this issue and will probably give the other issues a try sometimes. I’m not sure where it is going yet and hope it may have some Madeline Ashby in it.

What I read…07/14 Top 5 Comics.

In addition to standard books, I do read a lot of comics. So much so that I had to request a monthly budget to Celine to keep everything under control. To read them I exclusively use the ipad as I don’t miss the physical contact and love the fact that it doesn’t take any room in our apartment. I use comixology for 95% of the read and Dark Horse/Kindle for 5% remaining. What I’m looking generally is an interesting story full of characters but I’m very eclectic. I discovered a lot of comics through free issues. They are either #0 issues that are introductions to the universe or free issues part of a promotion to bring new readers. My top five as of today is:

1.Saga: Alana and Marko come from 2 nations at war but love each other against all odds. From their love, is born Hazel, their daughter. Saga is the story of this loving family. For fans of fantasy and space opera.  From Brian K.Vaughan and Fiona Staples.
Saga2. Revival: The countryside. The dead coming back one day…For the fans of The Returned for the theme and the ambiance. From Tim Seeley and Mike Norton.
Revival3. The Walking Dead: Before being a hit serie on AMC, TWD was a comic from Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard. It is the story of Rick’s posse in a world where zombies  run wild.
The Walking Dead4. East of West: A tale of the end of the world with the apocalypse, death and the 4 horsemen. From Jonathan Hickman and Nick Dragotta.
East of West5. Wasteland: Post apocalyptic adventure set 100 years after the “Big Wet” by Antony Johnston and Christopher Mitten.
Wasteland

And you, do you read comics? If no why? If yes, what do you like? What do you read?

Fifa Worldcup 2014 : Last predictions

As a boy raised in France,  I grew up playing soccer at lunch breaks until high school and watched games with my father on a regular basis. I used to turn my collar up just so I could look like The (other) King.

Since I live in the USA, I don’t follow as closely as I used to but still enjoy great action replays when I can find some. One constant for Americans is that they tend to make following sports interesting with fantasy games and all kind of bets. For this world cup my colleagues created a system where you were awarded points to predict the correct game result and group finish. I thought I had an edge in this due to my above average knowledge but I discovered that knowing to much can be a burden as well. I had predicted that Spain would lose to the Netherlands but I could never imagine them losing 1-5 thing that some had no issue to be Willy-Nilly. I ended up above average in the end but not enough to win anything (details are available on my tumblr),

The funny thing is that in the first draft I had Germany finishing second of their group behind Portugal and I ended up with a finale Brazil – Argentina with Argentina winning and Belgium finishing 3rd over Italy.

Direct Elimination - First roundIt didn’t really work out in the end because the group phase had some interesting upsets. I then decided to redo my bracket for the knockout phase and as you can see I’m current 14 for 14 in predicting the winners.Knockout v2 06/27I had Germany beating Brazil before Neymar and Silva were out, but I would never have guessed such a lopsided game. My dilemma now is to know if I should change my predictions for the last 2 games.

Let’s start with the game for the 3rd place:
I currently have Brazil beating Netherlands but I’m not really sure how they will react after their Germany beating. Brazil was in it to win it and anything else is going to be a disappointment. Will they be able to regroup and redeem themselves? Who will step up to replace Neymar’s contribution to the offense (4 goals / 1 assist). The Oranje fell very close to a consecutive finale after the one of 2010 versus Spain. I like their speed and offense but I bet on Brazil redemption and its people pushing to salvage what can be.

Then for the finale:
I think I have a bias towards Argentina as I always pick them up to win. I like the fact that they tend to play with 3 very offensive players. I like Messi and think it could finally be his year, but I like Angel Di Maria even more. If he can come back from his injury, Messi will be more free and Argentina’s chance will be better. I also have a bias towards Germany as I remember them being very defensive in the past and not necessarily linked to beautiful play but more effective plays. After Brazil thrashing, I believe that a lot of people will see Germany as the de facto favorite. It may be the hipster in me, but I will keep my confidence in Argentina and hope for Di Maria’s return.

And you, who do you think will win? Did you follow the world cup? Did you like it? Share in the comments below.

New news

Following my last post called Some News, I didn’t get any submission for the Double Critique: Landscapes. If any of my readers is interested in an honest critique, for landscapes or other, you can still contact me and I would be happy to help you.

I will however shift the focus of the blog slightly. Instead of being just dedicated to Photography, I will now talk about Photography, Pets, Games and Stuff ie basically everything I like. To that effect I changed the template of the blog and will add little by little to the other categories.

In Pets, you will find Red Pandas, Otters and other cutsies.
In Games, you will find video games to sports related articles.
In Stuff all the other things that are not photography, pets or games related.

I hope you will enjoy it and give me your feedback through comments or the contact me page.

Some news

Just in case people still visit this blog, I wanted to give some updates. Due to changes in the firewall I use during the week, I can’t access a lot of the sites I used to and when I can access I can’t leave likes comments.

I extended the submission date for Landscapes and posted the results of Flowers. If I don’t get any submission by the 07/02, I will assume that people are not interested and I will stop it. If you have a picture you would like me to critique by mail feel free to send me the link to it and I will answer as soon as possible.

I’m still trying to figure out my style but this time I’d like to take my time and not hurry things up.

Hope you enjoy the start of summer.
